Pakistani film wins award at Cannes Film Festival
Pakistani short movie “Joyland” has recently won the ‘Uncertain Regard’ jury prize at the 75th edition of the Cannes Film Festival competition. Its director Saim Sadiq and his team received an overwhelming standing ovation at the glittering event.
“Joyland” is the first ever film from Pakistan to be screened at the Cannes Film Festival, one of the world’s most prestigious film festivals.
One of the 20 films in the festival’s Uncertain Regard section, which celebrates “artistically daring” films and runs parallel to the main competition section, “Joyland” won the Jury Award.
The film, which tackles gender and sexuality issues that are taboo in our country, stars a transgender actress Aleena Khan as the lead.
Among others, Saim Sadiq’s debut feature stars Sarwat Gilani, Salman Peerzada, Sania Saeed, Ali Junejo, Sohail Sameer and Rasti Farooq. The film has been produced by Sarmad Khoosat, Apoorva Gurucharan, and Lauren Mann.
