Renowned singer Nayyara Noor’s sudden death shocks music lovers

Music lovers in Pakistan and abroad received a shock on August 20 that renowned singer Nayyara Noor had passed, at the age of 71 years, in a Karachi hospital.

She left behind husband Sheharyar Zaidi (a veteran tv actor), two sons and two grandchildren.

Nayyara had been suffering from late-stage cancer for the past one and a half years, her husband told media.

He said he had shared 49 years with Nayyara. Her death is a loss for the entire nation, but “my loss is more”.

Nayyara Noor was born on November 3, 1950 in Guwahati in Indian state of Assam, where she spent herearly childhood before her family migrated to Karachi, Pakistan in 1957.

Her singing ability was discovered at a music show at the National College of Arts, where she was a student. She had not acquired any formal training in music and it was a natural gift. She had a unique voice.

Nayyara Noor began her career from Radio Pakistan in 1968 and three years later she was introduced on tv and soon she began playback singing for movies.

All her songs got popular mass appeal due to her soulful voice and beautiful singing. She sang ghazals, nazm, free verses, naats, patriotic songs and film songs, and most of them are still popular. Her various memorable melodies are immortalized in PTV archives.

Nayyara won several awards  and accolades. She also received the Pride of Performance award in 2006.
